Everything you take must fit into a ruck sac that is suitable to go as hand luggage on the plane.

  • Small to medium sized rucksack, no more than 35litre size.
  • Stuff sac to put other personal items in when using ruck sac for hiking
  • Hiking trousers. (Long trousers are a good idea to hike in as there are lots of prickly things).
  • Shorts (down to the knee)
  • Lightweight gloves and hat or buff.
  • Thermals to wear at night as it can be cold especially in February and December.
  • Lightweight breathable tee shirts. (2)
  • Fleece or soft shell.
  • Lightweight waterproof jacket (the lighter the better as it probably won’t rain).
  • Lightweight padded jacket (or some other layer as it can get cold at night.)
  • Hiking socks.
  • Hiking boots or shoes.
  • Sun cream.
  • Sun hat.
  • Wash kit and travel towel.
  • Travel adaptor – EU type.
  • Travel belt to keep money, cards and passport.
  • Travel insurance document.
  • Water bottle (at least 75cl.) Purifying water bottles such as ‘Water to go’
  • Head torch or small hand torch
  • A few snack bars.
  • Flip flops or sandals to chill in.
  • Camera/camera phone
  • I will be taking a group leaders first aid kit with everything we will need. Please bring any personal medication you may be using.
  • Good quality lightweight equipment is the key for an enjoyable hike. We need to be prepared for spells of bad weather. The weight of your ruck sac should not be more than 15Kg. This includes all the food you will be carrying. Don’t go out and spend a fortune. I can point you towards better value retailers.
  • Hiking boots with ankle support. These must be worn in and waterproofed.
  • Socks. One pair to wear for hiking and a dry pair to wear at night.
  • Hiking trousers (not cotton or Jeans). Quick drying.
  • Long sleeved wicking base layer. Merino wool is a good choice as it doesn’t smell after being worn for multiple days.
  • Short sleeved wicking base layer. One of the base layers will be kept dry and worn at night.
  • Mid layer fleece or soft shell.
  • Down or synthetic Jacket. Lightweight and not bulky, packed in a waterproof stuff sack.
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers with leg zip. Don’t skimp on the waterproofs.
  • Hat and gloves, Lightweight Buff type hat and medium thickness gloves, not leather.
  • Three season sleeping bag. Rated down to zero degrees. Lightweight down is best because it is warm and compact.  This must be kept in a waterproof stuff sac. The sack it comes in will not be waterproof.
  • Thermal leggings. Merino wool is best. Three quarter length is best. These are worn around camp and at night.
  • Sleeping mat. Lightweight Thermarest type are the best. Must be compact and packed in a waterproof stuff sack.
  • 60 – 70 Litre ruck sac, lightweight as possible. A ruck sac rain cover is a good idea.
  • Cup/bowl/spoon, collapsible or titanium ones are a good idea.
  • Water bottle at least 750ml capacity.
    First aid kit with personal medication, blister treatment, ibuprofen, paracetamol, Imodium, antihistamine. Nail scissors.
  • Small wash kit containing toothbrush, toothpaste and soap.
  • Small travel towel.
  • Sunglasses, you never know it may be sunny and it will be bright when walking on snow.
  • Trekking poles. These are essential for extra stability and when river crossing, Don’t buy the cheapest, they will break.
  • Sandals or crocs for river crossing. Not flipflops.
  • Zip lock bags for rubbish and removal of used toilet paper. We need to carry all our rubbish out with us.
  • Dry bags (you need to make sure everything stays dry)

Additional personal kit

  • Camera with spare batteries
  • Phone charger cable. If you are taking a phone on the hike and using it as a camera you will need a power bank to charge it. There are limited charging opportunities on the trek. Phone should be kept in a waterproof case.
  • Extra clothes to wear for traveling and staying in Reykjavik  these can be left in Reykjavik when we are on the hike
  • Eye mask. This helps with sleeping in the daylight conditions.

Group kit that can be shared with between two people.

  • Two person three season tent. This should weight no more than 2.5 kilos for a two person and 2 kilos for a one person. Having a tent footprint groundsheet to go under the built in ground sheet is a good idea as you will be camping on wet ground and also on lava and this will protect the tent groundsheet. Practice putting the tent up before going.
  • We will be buying gas cylinders from a supplier in Iceland as they are not allowed to be taken on the plane. We will use two Jetboil stoves to boil water. I will supply these.
  • Four days food. Breakfast, lunch, evening meal, tea, coffee and snacks – minimum 2000 calories per day per person. All main meals will be dehydrated or freeze dried. Each evening meal/pudding should have at least 900 calories and each breakfast 450 calories. Test the brand of meals you are choosing to make sure you like them.
  • Toilet tissues in those small packs. There are toilets and showers at all of the over night camps.
  • Sun block. You never know!
  • Ruck sac or suitcase to transport all kit to and from Jordan, this will go in the hold of the aircraft and will have to be paid for;
  • Smaller day sac for hiking.
  • Down or synthetic jacket (it can be quite chilly at night)
  • Small travel towel and wash kit, wet wipes, hand gel
  • Toilet tissues, those little packs are good.
  • Head torch
  • Sun cream, lip salve,
  • Personal first aid kit: Ibuprofen, Paracetamol, Imodium, antihistamine, blister treatment, and any personal medication (you must inform the me of any medication you are taking and where it is)
  • Sunglasses,
  • Sun hat,
  • Neck Buff, these are good as they can be worn in a number of ways.
  • Hiking boots or shoes.

  • Thermal underwear to wear in sleeping bag.

  • Waterproof jacket,
  • 1 x Water bottle.  We will be supplied with bottled water throughout our time in the Wadi Rum.
  • 2/3 season sleeping bag. Our support crew will supply a camping mat.
  • Mug. Our Bedouin guide Ali recommends a metal mug as his tea tastes better in a metal one.
  • EU adaptor
  • Money belt or somewhere safe to keep money and passport.
  • Print out of boarding pass for outward and return flights.
  • Comfortable clothes to travel in and wear in the evening when in Aqaba and Petra.
  • Camera or mobile phone to take photos.
  • A note on mobiles:
  • If you are using your mobile for photos you may consider bringing a power bank to charge it. There is no mobile coverage or Wi fi once we are in the desert. So from midday on Sunday to midday on Weds we will not be able to communicate with the outside world. Please let your loved ones back home know.
