We will be carrying all the equipment needed to be self sufficient for six days. This includes a tent, sleeping bag, stove and food. Have a look at the kit list for details. Your packed ruck sac will weigh between 10 and 15 kilograms.
Hiking with an experienced mountain leader in addition to everyone having the necessary fitness and having the correct kit makes Iceland a safe place to hike. We will have to contend with the prevailing weather conditions and also the ground conditions underfoot with some uneven ground and snow underfoot. We will be possibly camping on or near snow at some point. There are a number of river crossings. These are carefully managed to ensure a safe crossing. The leader will be carrying an emergency beacon and a sat phone to be used in an emergency situation.
We will probably experience every type of weather from sunshine, wind to heavy rain showers and possibly snow. Temperatures can range from zero to twenty degrees centigrade.
The distances we will be hiking are quite short, say up to ten miles a day. If we have to combine two days hiking into one then the maximum distance will be 16 miles.
We will be staying in designated campsites. These will have showers and a toilet.
For four of the days you will be eating the food you will be carrying. You will purchase this in the UK. We will be able to purchase at least one evening meal when on the hike.
Yes no problem, hikers are all a friendly and sociable bunch.
The group will not be larger than ten.
Yes, you will need hiking insurance.
Icelandic Krona. This is available in the UK but you will need to order it. One Icelandic krona currently equates to 0.0063 pounds.
We will be using a bus for the 45 minutes transfer from Keflavik airport to the centre of Reykjavik. We will then use an off road bus for the journey to the start of the hike.
We suggest you take £150.00 in Icelandic Krona to pay for snacks, drinks and meals in Reykjavik and when on the hike. You will also have to buy one meal when on the hike and two gas cylinders.
Cards are accepted everywhere in Reykjavik but cash is best when on the hike.
Yes, most diets can be catered for.
This will depend on where the group is based in the UK. Flights to Iceland go from Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Manchester. We will advise on which flight to book when the trip is confirmed.
