The total population of Morocco is around 27 million of which 10 to 12 million are Berbers. Berbers mainly farm and live in the mountainous areas of the High Atlas and the Anti-Atlas although many have gravitated to the towns to live and work. Virtually all Berbers these days are Sunni Muslims. They have their own language with a number of different dialects. The Tamazight language has 38 consonants and just 3 vowels! They are a very friendly race of people always pleased to meet you, drink tea and are always interested in where you are from and what you have been doing.
In late autumn and spring when we go to Morocco it will be around 22 degrees centigrade during the day and 10 degrees centigrade during the night. The sun is strong so bring plenty of sun cream. It occasionally rains so bring a lightweight waterproof jacket.
You will be hiking and scrambling for between 5 and 8 hours a day. The terrain underfoot can be quite rocky and uneven so walking boots with ankle support is advised.
We will be staying in a locally run hill top kasbah and an oasis guesthouse. These are very special places, very authentic and wonderful to spend time in to explore and relax. They are run by local Berber people who will look after us and cook us some wonderful meals.
Morocco is a safe place to travel. There have been a number of isolated incidents, one recently in Marrakesh/High Atlas but these are very rare.

The Berbers in the area we are travelling are conservative muslims so are not used to seeing exposed skin. Ladies should avoid wearing clothes that expose shoulders and upper legs. Knee length shorts are fine but avoid skin tight Lycra.
For UK nationals and many other nationalities a visa can be obtained free of charge on arrival at Agadir airport. Please check on your particular visa requirement on line at www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/jordan/entry-requirements The foreign office section on Morocco has lots of interesting information on health, security, travel and customs.
You will need to buy some lunches when on your trip. There are also souvenirs that can be bought as well as the famous Berber slippers called Babouches. You cannot take Moroccan Dirhams into or out of Morocco. We suggest purchasing between 80 and 100 pounds worth of local currency on arrival at the airport. There is a cash point in Tafraout where we will be going later on during our visit.
